Overview
On the southeast of Messinia, at the first leg of the Peloponnese peninsula, there are two beautiful little towns: picturesque Methoni overlooking the Ionian Sea and the island comlex of Oinousses, and colourful Koroni, a place with insular atmosphere. Lets visit the first mentioned, Methoni with the famous Venetian castle.
Built in the early 13th century on a rocky peninsula, it is one of the largest in the Mediterranean. There are no words for the dazzling view of the Ionian Sea and “Oinousses“ islands! Through the sea gate you reach “Bourtzi“, the last two-storey and octagonal tower of the castle, a place once used as prison and execution. The impossive entrance with a stone bridge with 14 arches, the startling gate of the castle decorated with reliefs, the built-in Lion of St. Mark standing out, being a symbol of Venice, impress the visitors! Tracks, coats of arms, inscriptions, Venetian rulers’ ruins, relics of two Ottoman baths and bastions are just some of the castle’s attractions.
After the visit of this “fortified city” you return to your coach for the return trip.
Continuing the rue along the south-west coast of Peloponnese you have a short stop in charming Gialova village. The small picturesque settlement will charm you with its natural beauty. You will have some free time in the village to drink your coffee while enjoying the view or you can visit one of the local taverns on the seafront to taste the delicatessens of the Greek cuisine.
After this unforgettable experience you board back on your coach heading to your hotel.
