When you arrive at the Port of Heraklion you meet your professional guide on the pier. Your tour starts with the area of Mirabello Mountains. You will be rewarded with a superb view of the Bay and Spinalonga, a small rocky island with a large history since it was residence firstly for the most powerful fortresses of the Venetians, then the refuge for the Christians at the time of Ottoman era and finally during the period 1912-1958, the island served as a sanatorium for the lepers.
Our destination is one of the most important Byzantine-era Churches, the Church of Panagia Kera, built in the 13thand 14th century. You will admire many important Byzantine frescoes of the period as well as 14 scenes portraying the secret life of the Virgin Mary after Christ’s Crucifixion and Resurrection.
Our next visit is in the magnificent traditional village of Kritsa. Get marveled by the scenery since this Cretan village is built on the side of a rocky hill at an altitude of more than 1,230 above sea level. Kritsa is considered as one of the most important centers of the Cretan folk and weaving art. You will have free time to explore this picturesque village while strolling in the narrow streets.
However you can’t leave the island without a stop at the cozy fishing village of Agios Nicolaos. This Village contains till today the original tradition and culture of Cretans. Take the advantage of your free time to take a walk, relax and shop some souvenirs in this scenic village.
You will start your return trip to Heraklion Port full of memories and beautiful images.
