During this Zante island tour we will give you an opportunity to visit the most traditional villages on the island, completely away from mass tourism, and largely untouched by time.
After arriving in Zakynthos from Kyllini port, our tour starts in the capital city of the island.
Our first stop is at Bochali, a village above the town, which is one of the oldest and first inhabited areas on the island. There are the remains of the old Venetian castle and a stunning view down the city. We breathe some air, enjoy the view, take some photos and continue.
Our next stop is at Callinico Winery in the village Kalipado, which is one of the oldest wineries in Zakynthos. We will learn the process of making wine and, after we’ve become experts on local wine, you will also get the chance to take a wine tasting of many different wines. And of course you will try the traditional wine of Zakynthos- Verdea dry white wine. After the wine tasting we travel south to the village Lithakia, where we visit the olive oil press and Museum Aristeon. This olive oil press produces only extra virgin olive oil, the best quality olive oil you can find. After a short guided tour around the museum, you will learn everything about the traditional and modern way of olive oil production. To understand the importance of olive oil for the island, note that there is more than 2 million olive trees in Zakynthos and every single one of them needs to be harvested! Old stone and wooden machines, which were used in the past, are part of the display of the small museum. Part of the short tour is olive oil tasting with homemade bread as well!
We continue to the western, mountainous part of the island and drive through the small traditional villages of Kiliomeno, Agios Leontas, Exo Chora and Maries. At Exo Chora you will see the oldest olive tree on the island! Our next stop will be in Anafonitria’s 15th century monastery, which is of great importance for the island, as the patron saint, St Dionysios, was the Abbot of this monastery in the 16th century. After the visit to the monastery you can enjoy a cup of coffee or buy local products such as the famous Zakynthian raisins, handmade souvenirs, honey, local wine, olive oil and much more, which can be found only at these villages.
Of course, the highlight of Zakynthos, Navagio (Shipwreck beach), couldn’t be missed from this trip! The beach cannot be approached by land, but the view from above is simply breathtaking! We stop at a platform, where you can stand and enjoy the scenery and take loads of photos.
Later we continue driving to the north to the St Nicholas port, a very picturesque place, where on, we have a long stop for an optional lunch break. You can enjoy your lunch in this small, quiet, romantic village sitting at a tavern, right by the sea.
After this soul-nourishing stop, we continue driving along the beautiful eastern coasts of Zakynthos for the return trip.
