Katakolo is built over the ruins of Pheia. the port of Otympia and Pissa in antiquity. Pheia is mentioned by Homer. Thucydidcs, Strabo. and Pausanias; it was used by the Athenian fleet during the Peloponnesian war. The port was submerged after a devastating earthquake in the 6th century AD. The ruins of Pondikokatro (mouse castle) are to the NW of Katakolo, n the bay of Aghios Andreas. It used to be a fortress built by the Villeharduins. among the buildings materials used were parts of the ancient port of Pheia.

The castle overlooked all the Ionian Soa. tho sunset is magical. The rocky beach of Aghios Andreas attracts many visitors, the sea bed is considered magical. Katakolo started to flourish during the peak of the raisin trade. It was the port from which raisins were transported abroad. Katakolo was connected with Pyrgos by rail in 18B3. It is the second oldest railway line in Greece. The line now connects Katakolo to Pyrgos and Ancient Olympia. Katakolo is also the birthplace of the greatest Greek shipping tycoon loannis Latsis. The house he was born in is in the central square of the village and has been donated to the municipality of Pyrgos.

Pyrgos is the capital city of the prefecture of Ilia and was founded by George Tsernotas in the 17th century.

The city of Pyrgos played a pivotal role during the war of independence in 1821. After independence, Pyrgos prospered. The town became the crossroads of the provinces of Olympia, Gortynia and Elia thus turning into the administrative centre of the whole region.

The production of raisins played a major role in the local economy. In 1870 the population reached 9,000 when Athens, the capital of Greece had 45,000 inhabitants. Also important was the construction of the railway line that connected Pyrgos to Katakolo. This 13 km line was the second in Greece. The raisin trade led to great prosperity, and development. Many countries like Italy, Norway, the Netherlands, Germany, the Austro-Hungarian Empire, the USA and France had consuls in Pyrgos. Many factories were established and exports and imports increased.

Today the city of Pyrgos remains the agricultural and administrative centre of the prefecture. You can still see interesting sights like old neoclassical buildings and churches. The central square built in front of St Nicholas’ church (1906) is one of the largest and most attractive in Greece. The municipal market and Apollo theatre are the landmarks of Pyrgos. Both of these neoclassical buildings were designed by the famous Bavarian architect Ernest Ziller.

A unique ecosystem of unrivaled beauty

The area of Kaiafas hosts the most beautiful natural surroundings. A magnificent and unique ecosystem including the spas, the lake, the pine forest of Strofylia, the historic mountain of Lapitha and 4 km of golden sandy beach. The Kaiafa spas have been popular since antiquity. According to legend, the area of Zacharo was the Olympian gods’ resort.

The name Kaiafas is said to derive from the homonymous priest of Judea who convicted Jesus Christ. As he was sailing to Rome, his ship encountered a storm and ran aground. The priest went to wash in a hot water spring, however, the curse he carried for his role in Christ’s suffering made the waters stink from the odor of his soul.

The cradle of the Olympic Games

The ancient city of Elis was built on the left banks of river Peneios, between mountainous Elia and the coastal plain. Although Elis played a minor role as far as military and political affairs were concerned, it remained in the limelight for a long period of time as she was the guardian of the sanctuary in Dlympia and was responsible for the smooth administration and running of the Games.

Excavations have revealed that the site of Elis had been inhabited, with short intervals, since the middle Paleolithic ages (130/120,000) up to the Protobyzantine era (7th century AD). During Mycenaean times it was a very important centre and its inhabitants the Epeians are mentioned in the Iliad as they took part in the Trojan War led by Polyxenos. According to legend, Elis was founded by Oxylos, who came from Aetolia in the 12th century BC during the Dorian migration. He conquered the area, subjugated the indigenous population and formed his own settlement.

One of Oxylos’ descendents Iphitus made a pact with Lykourgos of Sparta and Cleisthenes of Pissa. As a result the Games were reorganized and the truce was established in 776 BC.
For centuries on, Elis flourished and enjoyed many privileges due to her role in the Games. The importance the Games had for the Elians can be seen in the agora of the city. According to Pausanias’ descriptions Elis boasted gyms, rings, arcades, temples, shrines but no buildings associated with public administration. One of the most characteristic ruins is the theatre. It was built in the 4th century BC near river Peneios, north of the agora, it has a very rare characteristic, the cavea is covered with earth and not masonry which was the standard. The stone stage is one of the oldest ever discovered. You can still see one of the oldest proscenia (built in the beginning of the 3rd century BC], its faqade was decorated with semi-pillars.
