Katakolon
Katakolo is built over the ruins of Pheia. the port of Otympia and Pissa in antiquity. Pheia is mentioned by Homer. Thucydidcs, Strabo. and Pausanias; it was used by the Athenian fleet during the Peloponnesian war. The port was submerged after a devastating earthquake in the 6th century AD. The ruins of Pondikokatro (mouse castle) are to the NW of Katakolo, n the bay of Aghios Andreas. It used to be a fortress built by the Villeharduins. among the buildings materials used were parts of the ancient port of Pheia.
The castle overlooked all the Ionian Soa. tho sunset is magical. The rocky beach of Aghios Andreas attracts many visitors, the sea bed is considered magical. Katakolo started to flourish during the peak of the raisin trade. It was the port from which raisins were transported abroad. Katakolo was connected with Pyrgos by rail in 18B3. It is the second oldest railway line in Greece. The line now connects Katakolo to Pyrgos and Ancient Olympia. Katakolo is also the birthplace of the greatest Greek shipping tycoon loannis Latsis. The house he was born in is in the central square of the village and has been donated to the municipality of Pyrgos.
